87-93 hood on 79-86
« on: September 24, 2009, 12:02:21 AM »
i'm wanting to put a "cobra r svo" hood on my 84 project car and cannot seem to find one for the 4 eye cars. could i trim the front edge off the 87-93 style hood to make it work? i know i would have to refinish the front of it, but i'm really just curious as to if the latch and hinges are the same.

no one? i know it can be MADE to fit, because the hinges, cowl, and fenders are the same. question is, is the nose shaped the same where the fenders go down toward the headlights?

^ No, it isn't. The earlier style has more of a fold in it while the '87 up style is more rounded.

As Fred eluded to, the front lip of the 87-93 is more gently rounded over versus the 83-86 having a sharper fold. Also, the headlight cutouts are far more 'squared off' and angular on the 83-86 hood. The center 'beak' is also a different width (slightly one way or the other, can't remember exactly which is wider at the momnent).
As for the latch and hinges; yes they bolt up in the same spots and in the same manner.  End result if you want the CobraR style for the 83-86 cars; find a stock hood and graft the CobraR section to it.
We won't even get into the 79-82 hoods here, as they have even more differences.

Go and look at the cars. Major difference in 79-82 and 83-86 hoods is the fact the grilles are different. And Latch IIRC. Actually 79-82, 83-84 and 85-86 have different hoods Oh and 79-82 hoods are shapped differently, the parts following the headlights are lower than the middle section and outer sections. I have have an 81, theres a guy here with an SVO and theres some 85/6 cars here, best thing is to look at all our pictures and compare. you can try Dark Horseracing they make hoods for the 4eyes found that when I was looking for pictures but this thread goes into some detail: http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/784105-82-hoods.html

Jax, the 83-84 Hoods are the same as the 85-86 hoods.  The only difference in 83-84 hoods and the 85-86 hoods is if you had the reverse facing scoop (on 83-84GT Turbos and 83GTs) you had a hole under the scoop.....THAT'S IT!

As to the 79-82 hoods, the complete cowl (center section) section is narrower than the 83-86 hoods. The nose of the hood on the 79-82 is flat across the center, with a slight angle back over the headlight buckets (as the nose is more squared-off than the 83-86s). Hood latch is also slightly different in location and the hood prop rod retainer on the radiator core support is a cast-in piece versus the later bolt-down type.
